Jakarta (ANTARA) - International relations expert Andrea Abdul Rahman Azzqy assesses that the prospects for an agreement between the United States and Iran will open up if Tehran obtains guarantees for its security and sovereignty.

Andrea made this statement when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Sunday, following the failure of negotiations between the United States and Iran held in Islamabad, Pakistan.

“So, the middle ground is achieved, yes, if Iran gets security and sovereignty guarantees,” he said.

According to Andrea, the failure of the negotiations that took place since Saturday night (11/4) in Islamabad reflects the depth of the chasm in interests between Washington and Tehran.

“So, this is not just a technical matter, but rather a reflection of both parties’ inability to move beyond zero-sum deal logic,” he stated.

Therefore, continued Andrea, Washington should provide guarantees for opening trade routes in accordance with international legal provisions.

He added that a realistic solution can be pursued through a joint monitoring mechanism under an international framework, not through unilateral dominance.

“The realistic solution is joint monitoring under an international umbrella. So, not unilateral dominance. The US wants dominance. They deliberately issued a statement through President Trump that they have the right to impose tariffs. This really violates the principle of sovereignty and logic,” he added.

“We reached an understanding on several issues, but our views differ on two or three important issues, so in the end, the talks failed to produce an agreement,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said on Sunday, as quoted by Mehr News Agency.

Iran and the US held talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Saturday (11/4), after US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Iran for a two-week ceasefire.

On Sunday morning, US Vice President J.D. Vance, who chaired the US delegation in those talks, announced that Iran and the United States failed to reach an agreement during the lengthy negotiations. The US delegation returned to their country empty-handed.
