Experienced Hikers Can Now Do a Day Trek on Mount Rinjani
Hiking Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, can now be done via ‘tektokan’, a method of climbing up and down in a single full day without overnight camping. However, hikers must be experienced and fulfil several documentary requirements.
The Head of the Administrative Subdivision of Mount Rinjani National Park, explained that the tektok trek is an option for hikers who wish to enjoy the beauty of Mount Rinjani without staying overnight. Nevertheless, this type of trek is specifically intended for trail runners or those who already possess the necessary experience and ability.
“It is not actually about opening a tektok trek, but rather clarifying the permit process for friends who train for trail running on Mount Rinjani and also for those who have the experience and capability, of course,” he explained on Sunday (21/6/2026).
He stated that a requirement that must be met is a recommendation letter from a hiking community or association. According to him, this is crucial to ascertain whether the individual concerned has hiking experience or not.
“The most important thing is a recommendation from a hiking association or community. If there is already a recommendation, it usually means they are members who are accustomed to trail running and are experienced,” he said.
The registration process and ticket prices are exactly the same as for ordinary hikers. However, the only difference lies in the recommendation letter from the hiking community and the permit application being made directly at the Mount Rinjani National Park Office.
“It is available as of today, and the registration is also like a normal trek. However, there are other requirements that must be fulfilled, namely a recommendation letter and a permit from the National Park Office,” he clarified.
Here is the procedure and stages for applying for a tektok trekking permit for Mount Rinjani:
Book a ticket via the e-Rinjani application. Ensure the schedule and trekking route have been selected according to plan.
Submit a tektok activity application letter to the Head of the National Park Office during working hours and days, endorsed by the hiking association or community. (Attach supporting documents, including a recommendation of capability and experience in tektok trekking, a photocopy of your ID card, and proof of e-ticket purchase).
The National Park Office staff will process the verification.
Receive a Recommendation Letter as a permit to carry out the tektok activity.
Complete the check-in process at the entry gate according to the predetermined schedule and trekking rules.
Report to the entry gate officer that you will be undertaking a tektok trek.
Carry standard equipment and medications. Even though you are not staying overnight, safety remains the top priority.
Submit an activity report after completing the trek as a form of accountability for carrying out the activity.
