Expensive Diesel, Used Diesel Cars Drop in Price by up to 20 Percent
The increase in non-subsidised fuel oil (BBM) prices at the beginning of May 2026 is beginning to be felt in the used car market, particularly in the diesel-engined vehicle segment. The price adjustment carried out by PT Pertamina (Persero) as of 4 May 2026 shows a significant surge in the non-subsidised diesel fuel category. Dexlite rose from Rp 23,600 to Rp 26,000 per litre, while Pertamina Dex jumped from Rp 23,900 to Rp 27,900 per litre. Agus, owner of Focus Motor, stated that the price drop for used diesel cars has been quite noticeable in the last few days. “Used diesel car prices have dropped 10 to 20 percent from the usual market rates,” Agus told Kompas.com on Monday (4/5/2026). According to him, the rise in diesel fuel prices is making prospective buyers think twice before deciding to purchase diesel vehicles, which have long been known for their fuel efficiency over long distances. “Demand has clearly dropped. That’s why we’ve lowered prices that much,” said Agus. Andi Supriadi, owner of Jordy Mobil, echoed the same, stating that prices for diesel cars at his dealership have also been adjusted downwards in line with market conditions. “Definitely down,” said Andi. He added that the price reduction could reach around 10 percent, especially for units lacking certain documentation. This situation demonstrates that the used car market is highly sensitive to changes in fuel prices, particularly for segments reliant on specific types of BBM. The rise in non-subsidised diesel prices is diminishing the appeal of diesel cars, even though they were previously known for greater efficiency in daily and commercial use. For now, price reductions are the main strategy for dealers to keep stock moving amid slowing demand.
