Expanding Technological Horizons: UBSI Pontianak Students Hold International Edutrip to UNIMAS Malaysia
Thirty-eight students from the Information Systems Study Programme at Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika (UBSI), Pontianak campus, organised the 2026 International Edutrip in Sarawak, Malaysia. Under the theme ‘Enhancing Global Insight in Digital Learning and Information Systems’, the programme, which took place from 23–26 May 2026, aimed to broaden students’ global perspectives on the latest technological developments and digital innovations.
During the academic visit to the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), the student group was accompanied by Eva Meilinda, a lecturer from the UBSI Pontianak Information Systems programme. The series of activities began with a public lecture by Dr Liew Siaw Hong, a senior lecturer and researcher from FCSIT UNIMAS. During the session, students were presented with in-depth material regarding the development of Electroencephalography (EEG) technology and its applications across various crucial sectors.
“EEG technology is no longer limited to the medical world. Its implementation has expanded into education, the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the optimisation of Human-Computer Interaction. Creative digital students must be able to identify opportunities for collaboration with this technology in the future,” stated Dr Liew Siaw Hong during his presentation.
Beyond classroom theory, the edutrip participants explored UNIMAS’s leading facilities. This included the Gamification Lab, which focuses on developing game-based technology to support modern learning methods and digital innovation. They also visited the Marker Place, a collaborative space showcasing various research results and innovative works by UNIMAS students, and the Tun Abang Haji Openg Digital Centre (TAHODC). This cutting-edge research centre is known for its active development of innovations in telecommunications, the Internet of Things (IoT), and AI.
Eva Meilinda, the accompanying lecturer, expressed her admiration for the research ecosystem at UNIMAS, hoping this academic atmosphere would inspire the students. “Seeing firsthand how IoT and AI are integrated into applied research at TAHODC provides a new perspective for the students. We want them to return with fresh inspiration, realising that the Information Systems theories they learn at the Pontianak campus have very broad real-world implementations on the international stage,” she said.
The Head of the Information Systems Study Programme at UBSI Pontianak, Muhammad Sony Maulana, emphasised that the international edutrip is a strategic programme to provide learning experiences relevant to global trends. “We are committed to ensuring that students are not only proficient in the classroom but also adaptive and responsive to how technology, innovation, and research evolve internationally. This valuable experience serves as a strong motivational boost for them to continuously improve their competencies in the field of information technology,” Sony stated in a release on Monday (8 June 2026).
Sony added that the challenges of the digital transformation era demand graduates who are not only academically excellent but also possess a global mindset. “Through this 2026 International Edutrip, students are not only absorbing global-standard academic knowledge but are also learning tolerance, experiencing new cultures, and observing the international educational landscape. We are optimistic that this experience will shape UBSI graduates who are internationally minded, adaptive, and ready for the global industry,” he concluded.
