Expanding Renewable Energy Use, KCIC Utilises Biodiesel for Maintenance Trains
KCIC General Manager Corporate Secretary, Eva Chairunisa, stated that KCIC is continuously strengthening the implementation of more sustainable energy to support the operations of the Whoosh high-speed train. In addition to using electricity for passenger services, KCIC is expanding the use of renewable energy through the application of B40 biodiesel in diesel-based work trains used for the inspection, maintenance, and upkeep of Whoosh infrastructure.
“The use of B40 biodiesel in work trains is one of KCIC’s steps to reduce fossil fuel consumption while increasing the use of more environmentally friendly energy in the operational support activities of Whoosh,” Eva said in a written statement in Jakarta on Friday (31/07/2026).
Eva explained that B40 biodiesel consists of 40 per cent palm oil-based biofuel and 60 per cent diesel, in accordance with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 32 of 2008 regarding the Provision, Utilisation, and Trade of Biofuels as Alternative Fuels. While the public recognises Whoosh as an electric-powered high-speed train, KCIC is extending its commitment to sustainability to its operational support facilities.
Consequently, the spirit of sustainability is present not only in passenger services but also in supporting operational activities. KCIC operates various work trains to support the inspection, maintenance, and upkeep of Whoosh infrastructure. These vehicles are used to monitor track conditions and geometry, perform rail inspections, support the maintenance of the Overhead Catenary System (OCS), and transport personnel, equipment, and materials required for maintenance work. All diesel-based work trains are currently using B40 biodiesel.
Eva noted that the use of biodiesel increases the utilisation of energy based on renewable resources while reducing fossil fuel use in infrastructure maintenance. Looking ahead, she added that KCIC is prepared to support the implementation of B50 in accordance with government policy, following the necessary testing processes and applicable regulations.
“Increasing the biodiesel blend is expected to further strengthen the transport sector’s contribution to supporting the national energy transition,” she said. Eva added that KCIC supports various government policies in promoting the use of cleaner energy, noting that the implementation of B40 biodiesel is a tangible step being taken currently. “In the future, we are ready to support the implementation of B50 in line with government policy after undergoing testing and meeting applicable regulations, while continuing to prioritise safety, equipment reliability, and operational readiness.”
