Exodus from Google: Top Engineer Jeff Dean Leaves to Found AI Startup Discovery Loop

Google is facing a wave of high-profile resignations, with one of its best engineers, Jeff Dean, leaving the company. Dean, who created the distributed systems underpinning everything from Google Search to its artificial intelligence infrastructure, has worked at the company since 1999 and was a crucial backbone of its engineering division. After nearly three decades at Google, he has decided to leave and found his own AI startup called Discovery Loop, according to TechBuzz. Dean is also reportedly bringing several Google executives with him, though the identities of those joining his venture remain unknown. Discovery Loop is a startup that leverages AI to accelerate scientific discovery across multiple fields, with a focus on areas such as drug development and semiconductor design. It is not yet known who will provide funding for Discovery Loop. This business focus will put Dean’s new company in direct competition with his former employer. Google has major ambitions to generate AI-based drug discoveries through its DeepMind unit’s AlphaFold protein-folding technology. The tech giant is also actively exploring AI chip design to reduce its reliance on Nvidia. Dean’s departure is a heavy blow for Google. During his tenure, he co-created MapReduce, a distributed computing framework for processing large datasets, as well as Bigtable and Spanner, the database technologies that support Google’s global infrastructure. Dean also previously led Google Brain and pioneered the development of the Transformer architecture, which forms the basis of modern large language models. TechBuzz notes that the departure of Dean and his colleagues is not just a loss of ordinary talent, but a strategic threat. AI divisions at large companies are often criticised for being overly cautious, slow to launch products, and burdened by bureaucracy and internal politics. Dean’s decision to resign signals that even Google’s most loyal developers are now choosing to leave in order to move faster in the industry.
