Exhibition of Nashar's paintings
JAKARTA (JP): Works by the prominent Indonesian painter Nashar
will be exhibited next week in commemoration of the artist's
death one year ago.
The exhibition will be held between April 10 and April 16 at
the Balai Budaya gallery on Jl. Gereja Theresia, Central Jakarta.
Nashar's second child, Suditawho, who is organizing the event,
said yesterday the exhibition would feature 60 works spanning the
years 1959 to 1994.
The painter, sometimes described as eccentric and reclusive,
reportedly left behind more than 500 paintings on his death at
the age of 67. Nashar died of tuberculosis on April 13, 1994.
There will be a discussion of Nashar and his work on April 13
at the gallery. Scheduled to speak are: writer Putu Wijaya,
sculptor Dolorosa Sinaga, and art critic Merwan Yusuf. The
discussion will be chaired by Nirwan Dewanto.
M. Sulebar Soekarman, a lecturer at the Jakarta Arts Institute
and a former Nashar disciple, said yesterday that Nashar was one
of the leading painters of the generation which followed that of
S. Sudjoyono, Affandi, and Basuki Abdullah.
Nashar began painting at the age of 16, placing himself under
the tutelage of S. Sudjoyono and Affandi. (jsk)
