Exercise caution when cleaning volcanic ash, dispose of it in sealed bags
The Depok City Government in West Java, through its Fire and Rescue Service, has advised that volcanic ash should be cleaned up carefully and disposed of in sealed containers or bags.
The advice was conveyed through the official Instagram account @damkardepok on Sunday.
The Fire and Rescue Service, together with relevant regional agencies, continues to monitor volcanic ash resulting from the eruption of Anak Krakatau.
The Disaster Management Operations Control Centre has also received reports of volcanic ash distribution from Anak Krakatau in several areas of Depok, including Cinere, Tapos, and Sawangan.
The Depok City Fire and Rescue Service has coordinated with the Depok City Health Office as a precautionary measure against the possible health impacts of volcanic ash on the public.
Exposure to volcanic ash can cause eye irritation, characterised by red, sore, watery, or itchy eyes. On the skin, exposure to the dust can cause itching, dryness, and even rashes.
If swallowed, volcanic ash can cause digestive discomfort, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
For this reason, the Depok City Fire and Rescue Service has urged the public to remain calm and take preventive measures. The public is also asked to pay greater attention to vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and people with certain health conditions.
In addition, the public is advised to limit outdoor activities if conditions remain dusty or if strong winds occur. Doors and windows should also be kept closed to reduce the amount of dust entering the home.
Maintaining personal hygiene is also important. The public can clean themselves after outdoor activities, including cleaning the nasal area with clean water, as well as changing and washing clothes worn while outside the home.
The public is also encouraged to meet their fluid needs by drinking more water.
