The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) is urging companies in the medical devices and electronics sectors to expand their business operations into the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun (BBK) areas. This initiative forms part of efforts to bolster industrial and port connectivity between Singapore and Indonesia. Singapore has already established itself as Batam’s largest foreign investor, with investments reaching S$617.3 million, equivalent to Rp8.08 trillion, in the first half of last year. The BBK region currently features five Special Economic Zones (SEZs) that provide various tax incentives and licensing facilitations for foreign investors. In this partnership, businesses are implementing a ‘twinning’ strategy, whereby headquarters and research facilities remain in Singapore, while large-scale manufacturing processes are relocated to Batam and surrounding areas. This is aimed at achieving efficiencies in land costs, labour, and utilities, which are more competitive than in Singapore. The economic cooperation under the Singapore-Johor-Riau growth triangle concept, initiated in 1989, is still deemed highly relevant today. Singapore’s strengths in management and technology are combined with the availability of resources and land in the Riau Islands to create a robust industrial ecosystem. In addition to manufacturing, other sectors such as logistics, information technology, and data centres are also demonstrating positive growth in this strategic region.
