Mount Merbabu National Park Authority has officially announced the reopening of climbing routes on Mount Merbabu following previous closure for area maintenance and visitor safety considerations.

The announcement is contained in formal letter Number PG.01/T.35/TU/HMS.01.08/B/02/2026 issued on 27 February 2026 in Boyolali.

The route opening is being conducted in phases and continues to include obligations for climbers to preserve environmental conditions and comply with climbing tourism protocols.

Climbers can now make reservations and plan their trips via these popular routes.

In addition to four routes opened earlier, the Wekas Climbing Trail is scheduled to resume accepting climbers from 16 March 2026.

This phased opening is being conducted to ensure route conditions are genuinely safe and passable.

Although the Suwanting Trail has opened on 9 March, the authority announced that this route will be temporarily closed from 19–22 March 2026. The temporary closure is for area management purposes.

All prospective climbers are required to make online bookings through the official website: www.tngunungmerbabu.org

This reservation system has been implemented to limit climbing quotas and preserve Merbabu’s ecosystem, which is vulnerable to pressures from nature tourism.

The authority has emphasised that all climbers must comply with the applicable Climbing Tourism Protocol, including maintaining cleanliness, avoiding environmental damage, and adhering to safety regulations whilst in the national park area.

However, safety and environmental preservation remain the primary priorities that must be jointly protected.
