Excelcomindo to use GPRS technology

ANYER, West Java: Cellular operator PT Excelcomindo said that it
would use General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology to give
its customers a faster data transfer service starting in the
second quarter of this year.

"We have to use this technology because in the Indonesian
market, technology is a significant selling point," Excelcomindo
director for corporate strategy and governance Rudiantara said
during a weekend press gathering.

He added that most high-tech demand came from major cities
like Jakarta and Surabaya where the customers needed high-speed
data transfer. Through GPRS its cellphone customers could use
multimedia mobile applications such as sending e-mails or
facsimiles or for browsing the Internet.

Rudiantara, however, admitted that the voice service was
significant to company's revenues while the data service would
contribute no more than 20 percent of the total revenues. -- JP
