Excelcomindo Pratama (Pro-XL), a major cell-phone player

Some people use their cellular phone occasionally, while
others use theirs a lot. Whereas the communications requirements
of large multinational corporations are perhaps even more diverse
than an individual's.

Everyone and every company, in the industry jargon, has
"unique and specific cellular needs".

GSM-based cellular phone operator PT Excelcomindo Pratama
(Pro-XL) recognizes that these needs, be they individual or
corporate, have to be met in specific and unique ways.

Since its establishment in October 1998, Pro-XL has been doing
just this, finding innovative solutions for a wide range of
multinational companies and individuals; and in the process, has
established approximately a 20 percent market share.

Its sales department is divided into two units: Corporate
Service, which provides cellular telecommunication solutions for
corporate clients; and Premium Sales, which provides service for
individual pro-XL postpaid customers.

Pro-XL corporate sales and premium services department general
manager, Agung B. Laksono, explained his and his two teams
philosophy: "We are not just in the business of selling a
product. We first discuss the customer's requirements and offer
the service based upon what we decide upon."

Its qualified human resources are backed up by the use of
advanced fiber optic technology, meaning users of its network
throughout Java, Bali and Lombok receive crystal-clear
communications.

Solutions

With this in mind, the department has come up with an
imaginative range of services and products for their clients.

Corporate Close Group Billing is an option for companies that
wish their workforce to stay in touch without running up huge
bills. It promises major discounts, in some cases cheaper call
fees than on land-lined phones, for internal communications
between Pro-XL customers within the same company. Phone usage can
also be controlled; users can set their own limits.

Bills can also be dispatched on an individual department
level, to further control costs. Bill summaries for total company
usage are also available. This service is ideal for companies
that wish to separate the cell-phone usage of each department. In
addition, every outgoing call can be identified. So bosses need
not worry that company money is being used to subsidize a
fledgling love affair, for example. Paying the bills is a smooth
process; billing information is available online, as is paying by
direct debit from major banks.

Corporate Private Net is a service offered to an individual
user or a group of users within a company. The objective is to
limit outgoing calls by only allowing certain numbers to be
dialed, normally work or business related.

Even though outgoing numbers are controlled, users of the
Corporate Private Net can still receive calls from whomever. They
can also add any Pro-XL postpaid feature to the service.

Flexibility

"Flexibility is the key. And we are still not yet satisfied.
We plan to become even more flexible," Agung promises. Each
customer, be they individual or corporate, has a dedicated
representative to explain to them their options and keep them in
touch with new developments. Agung says the teams in both
Surabaya and Jakarta are kept consistently busy.

One such development is Wireless Applied Technology (WAP),
whereby cell-phone users can access information from the Internet
and send and receive e-mails on the move. For Pro-XL, these
technologies fall under value-added services. The company is
currently undergoing trials and will be at the forefront making
it available.

According to Agung, the key factors are handset availability
and whether customers are comfortable with the technologies. One
thing is for sure, "the technology is not the driver behind the
development, but the service is". Pro-XL, then, is well placed to
become a major player in what some analysts believe will be the
market of the future.
