Examining the Impact and Debate Surrounding Standardised Tobacco Product Packaging

The Ministry of Health continues to push for the implementation of various new regulations regarding tobacco product packaging as part of the enforcement of Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024. This draft Minister of Health Regulation (RPMK) has raised numerous questions about its impact on the industry, workers, farmers, and the economy. The government states the policy is intended to strengthen the effectiveness of health warnings. However, various groups, including the Tobacco Farmers Association and the Tobacco Workers Union, believe its implementation will have a direct impact on economic and social conditions, including causing job losses and the increasing circulation of illegal tobacco products. The Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Health have even openly disagreed and are not yet aligned on this policy plan.
