Ex-Obama Speechwriter Panics: Democrats Have the Most Left-Wing Candidate in History
The victory of democratic socialist candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier in the New York Democratic Party primary has triggered unease within the party. Former US President Barack Obama’s speechwriter, Jon Favreau, even assessed that the win is a strong signal of the growing influence of the progressive left wing within the Democratic Party. On the Pod Save America podcast, Favreau highlighted Avila Chevalier’s victory as a development that should not be taken lightly. He judged that the candidate, backed by New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani, represents a major shift inside the Democratic Party. “Actually, the panic here centres on Darializa Avila Chevalier. And I will just say that she might be the most left-wing candidate to ever win a Democratic primary in our lifetimes,” Favreau said a few days ago. According to Favreau, Avila Chevalier’s success is not merely a candidate’s victory, but a reflection of the growing strength of progressive organisations that have managed to outperform the Democratic Party’s traditional political machinery. Co-host Dan Pfeiffer also assessed that the defeat of several incumbents by progressive candidates is a serious warning for the Democratic elite. “No one should ignore this,” Pfeiffer said. He added, “It is very clear that groups on the left wing, Justice Democrats, Democratic Socialists of America, Our Revolution, are actively organising, fundraising, working harder, and outperforming traditional party institutions. That is happening. They have captured that energy. They are more creative. They are more strategic. They are more aggressive.” Pfeiffer judged that this development shows the Democratic Party’s political infrastructure is beginning to lose its competitiveness against the more organised progressive groups. “And if you are someone in the elite circle of the Democratic Party, you should be very concerned about what this reveals about the party’s position, the party’s standing, and the party’s infrastructure’s ability to actually win elections. So this is a big deal,” he said. Favreau also criticised several of Avila Chevalier’s political stances which he considered to be outside the Democratic Party mainstream. He highlighted Avila Chevalier’s presence at an anti-Israel demonstration on 8 October 2023, a day after the Hamas attack on Israel, which he said the candidate has never regretted to this day. “Herein lies the problem,” Favreau said. “She has not apologised for attending an anti-Israel rally on 8 October 2023… and to this day, she still defends her presence at that rally.”
