Ex-cop shot for motorbike theft

JAKARTA (JP): Detectives from the Setiabudi subprecinct in South Jakarta shot a former police officer, who had been discharged from the force for desertion, on Monday afternoon for attempting to steal a police motorcycle.

The subprecinct's chief of detectives First. Insp. Toga Siambaton said the suspect, identified as Edi Subagyo alias Yoyo, 36, was shot in the left thigh after he failed to heed two warning shots.

Yoyo was caught red-handed stealing a police motorcycle which was parked near the Wisma Metropolitan building.

Toga said an undercover officer had helped the uniformed officers to arrest Yoyo.

During questioning, Yoyo refused to say much, except to admit that he was a former police officer in the Depok precinct.

Depok Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Anhar Azeth said Yoyo had been transferred from the city police to the Depok police, but had never turned up.

"So, Yoyo was discharged on Jan. 29 of this year," Anhar said. (ylt)
