Everything You Need to Know About Tonight's Mubeng Beteng in Jogja
The Mubeng Beteng Keraton Jogja tradition, held on the eve of 1 Suro or the Javanese New Year, takes place tonight. The event is open to the general public. Here are the details, including the schedule, route, and guidance for those wishing to participate.
The event, titled Hajad Kawula Dalem Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng, is held to welcome the Javanese New Year Be 1960. The tradition, organised by the Paguyuban Abdi Dalem Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat with facilities from the DIY Culture Office, can be attended free of charge on Tuesday (16/6/2026).
Members of the public who wish to attend are welcome to arrive at the location from 20.00 WIB. There will be an opening ceremony before preparations for the Mubeng Beteng departure. No registration is required; participants simply need to come to Kagungan Dalem Kamandungan Lor at the appropriate time.
“This activity is free, there is no registration, it is open and free of charge for the general public who wish to join,” explained the Head of the DIY Culture Office, Dian Lakshmi Pratiwi, in a written statement received by detikJogja on Friday (12/6/2026).
Mubeng Beteng Jogja Schedule
Mubeng Beteng 2026 will be held on Tuesday night, 16 June 2026, until the early hours of Wednesday, 17 June 2026. The schedule is as follows:
20.00-21.00 WIB: Participants gather at Kagungan Dalem Kamandungan Lor
21.00-23.00 WIB: Macapat (traditional Javanese poetry reading)

Requirements and Prohibitions
As the name suggests, Hajad Kawula Dalem Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng is an initiative of the kawula, or the people, specifically by the Paguyuban Abdi Dalem Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat.
“So this agenda is indeed not a Hajad Dalem belonging to the Yogyakarta Palace, but an initiative from the Abdi Dalem and the community in order to support the palace as a cultural centre,” explained the Chairman of the Paguyuban Abdi Dalem Karaton Yogyakarta, KRT Kusumanegara, in a written statement on Monday (15/6/2026).
“Socially and collectively, we together carry out this Mubeng Beteng cultural walk, uniting our feelings to undergo a shared reflection in welcoming a better new year,” he continued.
Because this agenda is not an official palace event, there are no formal rules for members of the public who join the walk around the beteng (fort). However, Kanjeng Kusumanegara urged everyone to maintain mutual comfort, silence, order, and the solemnity of the event.
“For all Abdi Dalem who will join, we urge them to wear pranakan attire and a complete kebaya,” explained Kanjeng Kusumanegara.
“For the general public, they can join in free, neat, modest, and comfortable clothing; we hope they do not wear shorts,” he advised.
In a post on the official Instagram account of the DIY Culture Office, @dinaskebudayaandiy, several guidelines were listed to be observed.
“To maintain the solemnity and smooth running of the event, all participants are expected to wear modest and neat clothing, not to bring attributes of any particular organisation, community, institution, or political party, and to always maintain order and cleanliness during the activity,” the statement in the post read, as seen by detikJogja on Monday (15/6).
Wayang Performance Before Mubeng Beteng
The Abdi Dalem of the Jogja Palace are not only holding the Hajad Kawula Dalem Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng to commemorate the eve of 1 Suro. A wayang gedhog performance is planned to be held before the Mubeng Beteng takes place.
This performance will be led by the puppeteer MB. Cermo Gupito, who is also one of the Abdi Dalem Dalang of the Kawedanan Kridhamardawa tasked as the production leader of the performance.
“This year, we from the Kawedanan Kridhamardawa are also participating in the celebration by presenting a wayang kulit gedhog performance held before the Mubeng Beteng cultural walk,” explained Cermo Gupito in a written statement on Monday (15/6/2026).
According to Cermo Gupito, wayang gedhog is a type of shadow puppet performance that is quite unique and rare because it features the Panji cycle of stories, rather than the Mahabharata or Ramayana like wayang purwa.
Wayang gedhog is one of the rare asset collections belonging to the Jogja Palace, which is now very rarely performed in the DIY region. This performance also aims to introduce and preserve wayang gedhog.
“Through this series of events, the community can interpret the wayang performance as a means of seeking ‘sangu’ (provisions) for self-introspection, because of course, within the wayang stories, many philosophies of life are contained,” explained Cermo Gupito.
This performance takes the Panji story with the play ‘Jaya Berdangga’, and will last approximately 4 hours from 19.00 WIB to 23.00 WIB.
The performance is broadcast live via the Kraton Jogja YouTube channel. However, the public is permitted to watch it in person at Kagungan Dalem Bangsal Kamandungan Kidul Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, located near Alun-Alun Kidul, directly behind/north of Gedhong Sasana Hinggil Dwi Abad.
This performance is open to the public and free of charge without the need for reservation; the public simply needs to attend in free, neat, and modest attire. After watching the wayang performance, the public can also join the procession of Abdi Dalem from Kagungan Dalem Kamandungan Kidul to Kagungan Dalem Bangsal Pancaniti.
“Because the wayang performance only lasts until 23.00 WIB, members of the public who wish to join the Hajad Kawula Dalem Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng can certainly still continue to participate in that activity,” concluded Cermo Gupito.
