Evaluation is too early

Evaluation is too early

President Megawati Soekarnoputri has not yet reached her 100th
day in office, yet her government's performance is already being
evaluated.

Among the criticisms leveled at her government's performance
is its lack of seriousness in combating corruption, collusion and
cronyism. Not a single person alleged to have engaged in these
practices has been brought to court.

Concern has also been expressed over Megawati's economic team,
which is said to have as yet failed to produce the desired
results. One of the symptoms of this is the renewed weakening of
the rupiah, which is still worth less than 10,000 to the U.S.
dollar.

Evaluating a government is part of the public's democratic
rights. Nothing wrong with that. However, it is too early for us
to evaluate Megawati's government.

As of Tuesday, Megawati had been in office for only 74 days,
including holidays. Why 100 days? It is believed that 100 days
is enough time for a leader to make real adjustments.

But still, it is not fair if we judge Megawati too soon.
Moreover, her time has been spent dealing with various upheavals
in society, such as anti-U.S. radicalism.
