Evaluating High Fences in Jakarta, Pramono: Do Not Create an Unsafe Image

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung plans to evaluate the installation of high fences in various areas of the capital, including office buildings and shopping centres. This step is being taken because excessive fencing is deemed to create a negative impression, as if Jakarta is in an unsafe condition.

Pramono emphasised that while security remains a priority, it should not be achieved through the construction of overly high and massive physical barriers. He believes that urban aesthetics must be maintained without compromising the safety of citizens.

“I will soon coordinate to regulate this. We must not allow this to create an image that Jakarta is not doing well,” Pramono stated on Saturday (1/8).

Based on coordination with security forces, Pramono stated that Jakarta’s current condition remains safe and under control. Therefore, he believes there is no urgent reason for building owners to construct excessive boundary fences that instead worsen the city’s appearance.

Pramono acknowledged that there is currently no specific regulation prohibiting the construction of high fences in both private and public areas. However, he emphasised that overly closed building designs can reduce public comfort and damage the cityscape.

As an alternative solution, the Governor encouraged building owners to prioritise eco-friendly concepts. He suggested that the function of fences be replaced or combined with more aesthetic natural elements.

“In fact, I think the fences do not need to be so high. What is important is having more trees, making it greener,” he added.

Through this evaluation policy, Pramono hopes that areas in Jakarta will become more open and inclusive. He is encouraging the addition of green open spaces to create an environment that is not only comfortable but also friendly to all layers of society.
