JAKARTA – Public attention often focuses on the safety of batteries in electric vehicles, particularly the risk of fires. However, behind these concerns, electric vehicle manufacturers have actually designed battery systems with high safety standards, including measures to withstand impacts and extreme temperatures. According to Cing Hok Rifin, electric vehicle batteries not only serve as energy storage but are also equipped with various protective layers to minimise risks during incidents. He explained that the batteries are arranged in modules, each with special separators or partitions. The function of these components is to contain the spread of heat if one cell experiences a fault. In addition, the battery’s position under the vehicle has been carefully considered. The underbody is protected by a special plate designed to withstand road impacts, including when the vehicle runs over hard objects. Not only that, the battery cooling system also operates actively to maintain stable temperatures. When the temperature rises, the system adjusts performance to prevent excessive heat. Rifin added that modern batteries are also equipped with ventilation systems to channel gas if abnormal conditions occur. The venting direction is usually designed away from the cabin to ensure passenger safety. With these various technologies, the risk of battery-related fires can actually be reduced to a minimum. In many cases, the source of fire comes from external factors, not the battery itself.
