European intervention
European intervention
From Merdeka
I was shocked to read about the European Parliament's plan to
invite Irian Jaya separatists to visit its office. This is
obviously an intervention into another country's internal
affairs. What is the real purpose of this move? There have been
many separatist groups in Indonesia, but none have been invited
to meet the European Parliament, which has also gotten involved
in the case of East Timor. What do they want? Do they hope that
those regions are separated from the Republic of Indonesia and
that they become independent countries?
They may feel that they are champions of human rights and
democracy. We all have agreed to uphold human rights and
democracy, but not at the cost of the country's unity. Any
movement directed toward that goal must be crushed. We have the
confidence that the Armed Forces will be able to deal with any
cases that may endanger the integrity of the nation, as has been
shown before.
