Europe imposes tariff on RI polyester yarn

JAKARTA (JP): The European Commission imposed temporary anti- dumping tariffs on Indonesian polyester yarn for four months as of May 30.

Bisnis Indonesia quoted an industrial source as saying that the tariff rates imposed on the goods range between 4.9 percent and 22 percent.

The tariffs were imposed based on an investigation conducted since July 1994 by a European anti-dumping team, which had received complaints from the Committee of International Rayon and Fiber Synthetics.

The rayon committee charged that polyester textured filament yarn, code-named NC 5402 33 10 and 5402 33 90, from Indonesia and Thailand were marketed in European countries at prices far below those set by European producers.

According to the daily, the prices of Indonesian polyester yarns were 41.3 percent, and the Thai yarns 49.9 percent, lower than those set by European producers.

Big European companies such as Rhone Poulenc, Hoechst, Akzo and Montefibre have reportedly suffered losses due to the alleged dumping practices.

The source said that the affected exporters from Indonesia are allowed to complain to the European Commission in relation to the accusations.

He said the anti-dumping team will continue evaluating the dumping allegations.

Definite sanctions will be decided after the evaluation is concluded in September. (kod)
