The European Union’s trade chief is urging the United States to swiftly reimplement the tariff levels agreed in last year’s EU-US trade agreement, the European Commission stated on Tuesday (5/5). The Commission added that it would be beneficial if the main provisions of the agreement were enforced ahead of its one-year anniversary in July. On the same day, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Paris, France. According to Sefcovic, the EU’s primary concern is US President Donald Trump’s threat to raise tariffs on cars and trucks from the EU to 25%. According to French news channel BFM TV, French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Tuesday that if the US imposes 25% tariffs on EU-origin cars, the bloc must “activate” anti-coercion instruments and also condemned what he described as that destabilising threat. “The signed agreement must be respected,” Macron said. He also stated that if any country is threatened with tariff imposition, the EU has equipped itself with the necessary instruments to activate. Under the EU-US trade agreement reached in July 2025, the EU will suspend tariffs on all US industrial products and impose quota-based tariff levels for various US agricultural and food products entering the EU market. In return, the US will impose 15% import tariffs on most goods originating from the EU.
