EU Launches €883.6 Million Team Gaza Initiative for Early Recovery
The European Commission has convened the second meeting of the Palestine Donor Group (PDG) in Brussels, co-chaired by Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa. The meeting saw the official launch of the Team Gaza Initiative, which has mobilised financial contributions totalling €883.6 million to support early recovery actions across various sectors for the well-being of civilians in Gaza.
Participating countries include Spain, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, and Belgium. Australia and Canada have also expressed interest in joining, while institutions such as the World Bank and the European Investment Bank will participate in the initiative.
The Team Gaza Initiative is rooted in the Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment for Gaza report, released in April 2026 by the EU, the United Nations, and the World Bank. Its goal is to coordinate early recovery projects to restore basic services for the population, including water and sanitation infrastructure, health systems, energy, agriculture, and food security.
During a recent visit to Israel and Palestine, Commissioner Šuica reached an agreement with Israeli authorities on the next steps for implementing two major projects in waste management and water in Gaza. The meeting included an initial exchange and alignment on these projects. To ensure funds are delivered securely and transparently to the Palestinian Authority, the European Commission is relying on the PEGASE mechanism, a system established in 2008 that applies high control standards through ex ante audits and ex post verification. Since its inception, PEGASE has channelled a total of €3.8 billion in support to the Palestinian people.
