Brussels - New EU regulations aimed at strengthening anti-corruption efforts have taken effect, introducing a more harmonised legal framework to prevent, detect, and punish corruption across member states.

The directive establishes a common definition for key corruption offences, including bribery, embezzlement, influence peddling, illegal public function performance, obstruction of justice, and corruption-related enrichment, according to a European Commission statement on Monday.

It also sets minimum criminal penalties for individuals and legal entities involved in corruption, and mandates member states to ensure authorities have sufficient time to investigate and prosecute cases through minimum limitation periods.

The framework requires governments to equip law enforcement and prosecutors with adequate investigative tools and strengthen prevention measures via national anti-corruption strategies.

Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy Henna Virkkunen said: “These new rules are a crucial part of our commitment to upholding the rule of law. Together with the upcoming EU Anti-Corruption Strategy, this sends a clear message: the Commission will take firm action against those who betray public trust.”
