EU Considers Sanctions Against Israeli Officials Over GSF Incident
Brussels — The European Union is considering the imposition of sanctions against several senior Israeli officials following the detention of activists from the pro-Palestinian Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), according to a report by Politico citing a draft final document for the EU Summit scheduled for 18-19 June.
According to the report, EU member state ambassadors will discuss the potential implementation of restrictions against senior members of the Israeli government for the first time this Wednesday. “The European Council condemns the mistreatment of detainees following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in international waters,” the draft document states.
The document also “invites the Council of the European Union to continue discussions regarding restrictive measures against extremist ministers who instigate and encourage such human rights violations.” An unnamed EU official told Politico that a final decision will be made after all member states have presented their views, noting, “We must listen to the position of all parties before reaching a final agreement.”
The report also noted that the Czech Republic has expressed opposition to the plan to sanction Israel.
Previously, Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, released a video showing Israeli security forces forcing detained GSF activists to kneel, face the floor, and be bound. Ben-Gvir himself appeared in the video, making statements described as provocative towards the activists. The Global Sumud Flotilla subsequently reported approximately 30 cases of broken bones among its activists and accused Israeli forces of harassment.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international humanitarian convoy involving dozens of civilian ships from numerous countries, aiming to break the Israeli naval blockade to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip, Palestine. The movement includes hundreds of volunteers, including environmental activists, journalists, medical professionals, and international politicians. Their vessels carry emergency humanitarian aid such as high-protein food, clean water, milk, and essential medical supplies. The GSF mission serves as a form of global solidarity and a peaceful effort to demand an end to the blockade and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, the flotilla frequently faces obstacles, including interception in international waters by the Israeli military, leading to the detention of activists.
