EU calls on Israel to halt military escalation in Lebanon
Beijing (ANTARA) - A spokesperson for the European Commission on Monday (1/6) called on Israel to halt its military escalation in Lebanon and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Lebanese nation.
EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni stated during a press conference that the EU also encourages continued engagement in ongoing diplomatic efforts, which aim to secure a negotiated path towards long-term stability and security for both Lebanon and Israel.
He noted that the Lebanese people have endured immense suffering. “They did not choose this war, and this is not their war,” he said, adding that both the Lebanese and Israeli people have the right to live in peace, security, and dignity, free from the threat of recurring conflict.
When asked regarding the United Nations mandate for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which is set to expire at the end of 2026, and whether the EU is considering playing a more proactive role in the security arrangements in southern Lebanon, El Anouni stated that the EU is currently reviewing a new EU mission to assist in strengthening state control in Lebanon.
According to Lebanon’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, Israeli attacks since 2 March have killed more than 3,400 people and injured over 10,200 others in Lebanon.
