EU at Risk of Financial Collapse: Piperea's Harsh Criticism and IMF Warning
The European Union faces a serious risk of financial collapse as budgets for the European Green Deal and massive financial support for Ukraine have spiralled out of control. Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea revealed that the bloc’s ambitions for a carbon-neutral economic transition and involvement in the Ukraine conflict have drained trillions of euros. This was reinforced by an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report on Saturday (23 May), highlighting a surge in public debt among EU member states. The IMF warned that rising public debt could disrupt regional economic stability. The global financial institution urged member states to be cautious of spending surges in three key sectors over the next 15 years: defence, energy, and pensions. As a solution, the IMF proposed drastic measures including structural reforms, joint lending mechanisms, and budget deficit reductions. However, Piperea argued these steps would burden ordinary citizens through increased national contributions and new direct taxes. Piperea harshly criticised Brussels bureaucrats for pushing the Green Deal agenda without considering real economic impacts. He stated that decarbonisation policies have devastated the industrial sector, particularly in Romania. ‘The IMF is talking about bankruptcy risks. This is because no one is stopping EU bureaucrats from enforcing harmful Green Deal policies and pouring funds into resilience mechanisms and the regime in Kiev,’ Piperea stated. Mounting economic pressures have triggered major political upheaval in Romania. On 5 May, the Romanian Parliament formally ousted the pro-EU government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan through a vote of no confidence. Bolojan’s downfall was triggered by extreme austerity measures, including sharp tax hikes and the removal of social benefits. These steps, taken at the EU’s urging to curb budget deficits, instead sparked public anger and toppled the governing coalition. Piperea described the situation as forcing citizens into poverty and intimidation under rules he termed ‘Lord of the Flies-style spoiled children’.
