Ethical Challenges of AI on Campus: Between Innovation and Academic Responsibility

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the world of education has now become a double-edged sword between innovative efficiency and ethical challenges. Cyber University, or Indonesia’s Cyber University, underscores the importance of regulation and digital literacy so that this technology does not erode academic integrity values.

AI technology currently offers great opportunities through adaptive learning systems that tailor materials to individual student needs. Lecturers are also assisted in preparing teaching materials and providing faster, more structured feedback.

However, behind this convenience, concerns arise regarding the use of AI to generate scientific works without independent thinking processes. This has the potential to lower education quality if not accompanied by firm rules and guidelines for use.

Dicky Haryanto, Head of the Information Technology Study Programme at Cyber University, states that transparency is a crucial principle in implementing this technology. According to him, every use of AI in assignments or research must be accompanied by clear acknowledgement.

“Institutions need to establish clear boundaries as well as fair detection mechanisms. In addition, protecting students’ personal data must remain the top priority,” said Dicky in his official statement on Friday (24/4/2026).

Dicky added that adaptive regulations are very necessary so that innovation is not hindered but still remains within the corridor of ethics.

“Strengthening digital literacy for educators and students becomes the foundation for understanding how AI works and its risks,” he said.

As a concrete step, the Information Technology Study Programme at Cyber University is now beginning to integrate AI learning that emphasises aspects of professional responsibility, not just usage. This approach is carried out through an industry-based curriculum and applied research for students.

“This effort is expected to produce graduates who are not only technically competent but also have high integrity. In the future, responsible AI utilisation is hoped to become a strategic partner in driving national digital transformation,” said Dicky.
