Estrada promises $51,000 reward

MANILA (AP): President Joseph Estrada promised Wednesday to
give 2 million pesos (US$51,200) to any Filipino athlete who wins
a gold medal during the 13th Asian Games this month in Thailand.

Estrada made the promise during sendoff ceremonies at the
presidential palace for the 400-person delegation, which includes
257 athletes.

"I have no doubt that you will perform well," Estrada said. "I
have always believed in the skill and the fighting spirit of the
Filipinos, especially our athletes."

Estrada did not say how many golds he expects from one of the
country's biggest sporting contingents ever.
