Estimated Peak Schedule for Eid al-Fitr Mudik 2026 Announced
Indonesia’s Transportation Policy Agency (Baketrans) under the Ministry of Transportation has projected that the surge in travel for Eid al-Fitr 2026 will peak on 18 March (H-3), whilst the return journey will reach its peak on 27 March (H+6). Citizens planning to return to their hometowns for the celebration are advised to avoid these dates to prevent being caught in traffic congestion, as millions of vehicles are expected to traverse the toll roads.
Baketrans estimates that approximately 143.9 million people will undertake Eid travel in 2026, primarily using private vehicles. According to a survey of population movement patterns presented by Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi at a full Cabinet session, this figure represents 50.6 per cent of Indonesia’s population.
Of the total number of travellers, 76.24 million people (approximately 52.98 per cent) have chosen to travel by private car, with most mudik travellers originating from Java and dispersing to various regions. “Nationally, private vehicles remain the primary transport mode for mudik travellers at 76.24 million people, followed by motorcycles and buses,” stated Dudy.
The top five origin provinces are West Java (30.97 million), DKI Jakarta (19.93 million), East Java (17.2 million), Central Java (16.57 million), and Banten (11.17 million). The primary destinations are Central Java (38.71 million), East Java (27.29 million), West Java (25.09 million), DI Yogyakarta (8.20 million), and South Sulawesi (5.36 million).
To mitigate traffic congestion during the mudik period, the public is encouraged to avoid these peak dates. The national police have implemented a comprehensive traffic management scheme for the Trans-Java Toll Road:
One-Way System for Outbound Journey (Mudik):
