Essential Precautions for Tourists Planning to Climb Mountains
The Ministry of Tourism has emphasised the importance of knowledge and preparation for tourists intending to climb mountains, especially active volcanoes. In a written statement to ANTARA in Jakarta on Friday, the Ministry advised that both tourists and hikers should check the status of their intended volcano before commencing an ascent.
Volcanic activity status can be monitored via the MAGMA Indonesia application, developed by the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). If the volcanic activity status is declared unsafe for climbing activities, tourists and hikers are requested to cancel their plans.
If conditions remain suitable for climbing, hikers are encouraged to comply with regulations regarding safe and danger zones around the volcano. “Ensure that you contact certified local guides who are equipped with the expertise to know exactly which points are safe and when to cancel an ascent,” the Ministry of Tourism stated.
In addition to preparing appropriate gear and footwear, hikers are advised to carry respirator masks to protect against potential toxic gas emissions or volcanic ash during the climb. The Ministry of Tourism requested that hikers and tourists obey all rules and refrain from violating prohibitions set by the PVMBG or local area managers.
The Ministry urged hikers to listen to and follow instructions from field officers, advising against forcing an ascent to the summit or crater if conditions are unfavourable. “Being a great climber does not mean being death-defying, but knowing when to stop for the safety of oneself and others,” the Ministry added. Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism reminded tourists planning to climb mountains to respect and preserve the natural environment.
