'ESPN' to set up base in Singapore

SINGAPORE (AFP): The Singapore Broadcasting Authority (SBA)
announced yesterday that it had licensed the U.S. entertainment
and sports broadcasting network ESPN to operate here.

Using Singapore as its Asian operational base, ESPN will be
broadcasting three channels in English, Hindi and Mandarin to the
Indian subcontinent, China and Southeast Asia.

ESPN, the world's largest cable sports network and seen in
more than 100 countries, is the ninth foreign satellite
broadcaster to set up operations in Singapore.

The three dedicated ESPN feeds from Singapore will provide
tailored programs, commentary and graphics to Asian viewers.

The other eight broadcasters uplinking from Singapore are Asia
Business News Pte. Ltd., Asia Television Network Ltd., Discovery
Asia Inc., Golden Eagle Communications Ltd., Home Box Office
Asia, MTV Asia, Walt Disney Television (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and
Sun Television.
