ESG Integration Strengthens Santunan Programme and Sharia Financial Education
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes continue to evolve. Previously synonymous with ceremonial activities involving the distribution of aid, more companies are now integrating social programmes with sustainability principles to provide broader and longer-term benefits for the community. This approach aligns with the implementation of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, which emphasise not only environmental aspects but also social impact and good corporate governance. PT Pegadaian (Persero) Sharia Service Unit (UPS) Pondok Jaya demonstrated this commitment through a charitable event for orphans held at the CPS Pondok Aren office on Monday (29/6). In addition to distributing cash assistance and prayer equipment, Pegadaian also provided early sharia financial literacy education. The organisers implemented an eco-friendly concept by minimising the use of single-use plastics as part of the environmental aspect of ESG. Putri Utami Dewi, Head of UPS Pondok Jaya and Chair of the event, stated that the activity was part of the company’s social responsibility, holistically integrated with ESG values. ‘We ensure that Pegadaian’s presence has a direct positive impact on the welfare of the surrounding community. We also minimised the use of single-use plastics during the event as a form of environmental concern,’ Putri said. She added that through this approach, Pegadaian seeks to ensure that every social programme does not stop at distributing aid but also provides sustainable benefits through education, environmental awareness, and strengthening social values. Cepi Kurnia Nugraha, Head of CPS Pondok Aren, added that the collaboration between UPS Pondok Jaya and CPS Pondok Aren in organising this activity embodies the company’s commitment to implementing good governance. He stressed that all disbursements of community care funds are documented and appropriately targeted to maintain the trust of stakeholders. ‘We hope this assistance can ease their burden and motivate the children to continue achieving,’ Cepi said. Meanwhile, Maryono, Regional Head of PT Pegadaian Regional Office IX Jakarta 2, appreciated the initiative taken by the unit and branch levels. He stated that integrating ESG into all corporate activities has become an inseparable part of the company’s strategy to support sustainable development. ‘This charitable activity initiated by our colleagues in Pondok Jaya and Pondok Aren is a concrete manifestation of our social pillar,’ Maryono asserted. Through this activity, Pegadaian hopes to strengthen its closeness with the community while inspiring other business sectors to increasingly prioritise sustainability and social responsibility in their operational activities.
