ESDM projects 3 kg LPG consumption at 8.6 million tonnes for 2026

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) projects 3 kg LPG consumption for 2026 at 8.6 million tonnes, higher than the quota set in the 2026 State Budget (APBN) of 8 million tonnes.

“For 2026, the prognosis is indeed 8.6 million tonnes,” said Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of ESDM Laode Sulaeman during a hearing with Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), monitored from Badung, Bali, on Wednesday.

Laode explained that the realisation of 3 kg LPG distribution up to July 2026 stood at 5.05 million tonnes out of the 8 million tonne quota. He projected that by the end of 2026, 3 kg LPG distribution would reach 8.677 million tonnes, or 108.46 percent of the quota.

He also stated that for 2027, the projected consumption of 3 kg LPG could be higher than in 2026. Citing the 2027 Draft State Budget (RAPBN), the 3 kg LPG volume quota is set at 8.9 million tonnes, higher than the 3 kg LPG quota in the 2026 APBN.

“For 2027, it has also been conveyed that the projection could exceed that of 2026,” he added.

According to Laode, 3 kg LPG consumption has continued to increase year on year. He also highlighted that the distribution of 3 kg LPG remains open, meaning anyone can purchase 3 kg LPG.

“Efforts have indeed been made to reduce the burden of this increasing LPG consumption,” said Laode.

One such effort is transforming the distribution of 3 kg LPG. Laode explained that the transformation of LPG distribution began on 1 March 2023 in two stages.

The first stage involved registering 3 kg LPG users in a web-based system and implementing purchases of 3 kg LPG in accordance with the registration results.

The second stage involves data matching and targeting of specific LPG users, so that the annual rate of LPG consumption can be reduced.

“Furthermore, Pertamina together with Dukcapil have also signed an MoU. All data will be strengthened before we later implement regulations for the classes of society that utilise 3 kg LPG,” said Laode.
