ESDM: Dieng Unit 2 Geothermal Plant Development for Energy Self-Sufficiency
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has revealed that the construction of the Dieng Unit 2 Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) is intended to realise energy self-sufficiency in accordance with the Asta Cita of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the ESDM Ministry, Eniya Listiani Dewi, stated during the online groundbreaking ceremony in Dieng, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java, on Thursday, that the project is a tangible contribution to supporting the President’s vision. She noted the President’s recent speech expressing a desire to achieve energy self-sufficiency within four to five years by utilising domestic resources. Eniya said the development of the Dieng PLTP has been long-awaited and represents a concrete step by Indonesian developers to establish geothermal energy as a foundation for national energy security, particularly given Java’s substantial need for baseload electricity. She expressed appreciation for the commencement of the 55 Megawatt (MW) plant’s construction. Eniya further stated that to optimise Indonesia’s abundant geothermal potential, which is the largest in the world but remains underutilised, the Ministry is encouraging all developer companies to explore further and deliver benefits to the community. The PLTP will drive sustainable green economic growth, and the Ministry hopes stakeholders and the surrounding community in Dieng can collaborate more extensively to build the plant together. She described the project as a strategic investment and a collaboration among various stakeholders working together to realise Indonesia’s future energy self-sufficiency. The Ministry is committed to ensuring adaptive policies, good governance, and collaboration, noting that geothermal power plant development often serves as an example of construction that must maintain environmental integrity while fostering a conducive climate for strategic investment. On the same occasion, President Director of PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero), Yudistian Yunis, said the groundbreaking of PLTP Dieng Unit 2 symbolises optimism and Indonesia’s continuous movement towards a more independent, cleaner, and sustainable energy future. He added that the project is part of a collective effort to harness the country’s geothermal wealth for tangible community benefits. With a capacity of 55 MW and a target operational date in 2028, the project will add reliable clean electricity supply and strengthen the role of geothermal energy as a backbone of national energy security.
