The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has disclosed that the approved Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) for coal production in 2026 has surpassed 600 million tonnes. Director General of Mineral and Coal, Tri Winarno, confirmed the volume during a meeting in Jakarta on Monday, stating, “600 something. Yes, slightly more.”

Tri explained that the government has also set a Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) for coal amounting to 191 million tonnes. Meanwhile, the annual coal requirement for state electricity company PLN’s power plants is estimated to be between 152 million and 154 million tonnes. “PLN’s demand is around 152-154 million tonnes. So there is actually a gap there,” Tri noted, adding that the follow-up on this matter lies with PLN’s contract management.

He emphasised that while the ministry conducts regular monitoring of coal supply for power generation, the execution of procurement contracts falls under the authority of the respective companies. Tri expressed hope that recent improvements in PLN’s governance would prevent future supply issues, stating, “Hopefully there have been improvements. PLN’s governance has started to improve.” He also mentioned that PLN’s existing contracts already cover 134 million tonnes, but scheduling matters are not handled by the Mineral and Coal Directorate.
