An escalator at Duri Station, West Jakarta, experienced a malfunction that caused it to suddenly move backwards while being used by passengers. Several people on the escalator reportedly fell and collided with one another.

A local resident, Mayska, stated that the incident occurred in the morning around 07:00 WIB. At the time, the escalator was initially operating normally.

“It was normal at first. The incident happened in the morning, around 7 o’clock,” Mayska said when met at Duri Station on Saturday (3/10/2026).

Mayska admitted she was not on the escalator when the incident occurred. However, she witnessed the condition of the passengers after they had fallen.

According to her, the escalator, which should have been moving upwards, suddenly moved backwards. Passengers on board were startled and lost their balance.

“The escalator suddenly went backwards. It was supposed to go up, but during the incident, it went backwards. People were unprepared, so they all fell and bumped into each other. They lost their balance,” she said.

The situation briefly descended into panic. Bystanders at the location reportedly began shouting for help.

“People immediately started shouting for help. Security guards and officers immediately took the injured individuals to the health post. They were shocked too. People were injured,” she revealed.

She noted that the situation at Duri Station was quite busy at the time, though not overly crowded.

Meanwhile, another resident, Eka, admitted to using the escalator after it had been shut down. He passed through the escalator around 08:00 WIB.

Eka said that the escalator had stopped moving, but staff had not yet installed barriers, allowing commuters to pass through.

“I went down using that escalator, but it had already stopped. Around 8 o’clock, there was nothing there, but the escalator hadn’t been closed off yet. So, I just passed through,” said Eka.

He only learned that the escalator had experienced a malfunction after receiving information from other residents.

“Yes, but the barriers hadn’t been put up by the officers yet,” he added.

Eka admitted to feeling worried after learning that the escalator had malfunctioned and reversed direction. However, because the escalator was stationary, he assumed it was safe to use.

“I was actually quite worried, especially after hearing the escalator had moved backwards. But since it was stopped, I thought it was safe to go down,” he added.
