Esa Unggul University's RPL Programme: A Solution for Career Advancement through Recognition of Prior Learning
After years of hard work, gaining experience, and proving competence in the workplace, many professionals in Indonesia face a common obstacle when seeking higher education for career advancement: the need to start from scratch. Work experience accumulated over many years is often not fully accommodated within the formal education system, meaning workers require more time to obtain the academic qualifications necessary for higher-level roles.
In the current dynamic labour market, this challenge is increasingly significant. According to 2025 employment data from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the average working hours for Indonesian workers reach approximately 41 hours per week, with labourers and employees reaching up to 43 hours. Around 25 per cent of workers even exceed 49 hours per week, categorised as excessive working hours. This indicates that many workers have invested significant time and energy into learning directly on the job but still lack the formal recognition needed to ascend the career ladder.
Case studies highlight this trend. Arif, a 35-year-old manufacturing operator with over 10 years of experience, mastered production processes and quality control but faced educational barriers when attempting to move into administrative roles. Similarly, Sari, a 30-year-old administrative staff member with seven years of experience, sought academic backing in Management to transition into a supervisory role. Lina, a 33-year-old nurse, also decided to pursue Nursing studies to move into a coordinator position.
To address this need, Universitas Esa Unggul, powered by Arizona State University, has introduced an Employee Class Programme featuring the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme. This programme allows professional work experience to be recognised as part of the academic process, where relevant experience can be converted into semester credit units (SKS). This enables students to avoid starting from zero, making their period of study more efficient.
In addition to the RPL scheme, the collaboration with Arizona State University offers an international standard curriculum that integrates future-oriented industry materials such as artificial intelligence, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Students also have the opportunity to obtain global certifications integrated into their studies at no additional cost. The university offers a wide range of faculties, including Economics and Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Communication, Law, Psychology, Education, and Health.
“We observe that many workers already possess competencies relevant to their fields. Therefore, RPL is presented so that such experience receives recognition and education becomes more relevant to their career development,” stated the Rector of Universitas Esa Unggul, Dr. Ir. Arief Kusuma Among Praja, ST, MBA, IPU, ASEAN Eng.
Through the RPL Programme, Universitas Esa Unggul is committed to providing adaptive, relevant, and international-standard education, ensuring Indonesian professionals can transform their hard work into tangible career progress.
