Ericsson wins RI deal
STOCKHOLM (Reuter): Swedish telecoms group LM Ericsson AB said yesterday it had won a contract from Indonesian wireless data operator, PT Massinfo Nusantara, to supply and install a Mobitex communications network.
No financial details were released.
Ericsson said in a statement that in the first phase of the contract the network would cover the greater Jakarta metropolitan area with a total capacity of 25,000 subscribers.
The first network expansion will cover Surabaya-East Java.
"Looking at the demand for wireless data communications in Indonesia, we are expecting to expand our network to cover all the major cities within five years," an Ericsson spokesman said in the statement.
The spokesman said some applications would be transferred to the network immediately, such as E-mail, short data transfer and telemetrics.
The network would go commercial at the end of this year under the proposed timetable.
Ericsson said its Mobitex system was leading technology for mobile data communication and one of the fastest growing segments in the field of mobile communications.
