Erick Thohir Warns Indonesia National Team Not to Underestimate Mozambique

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir has requested that the Indonesian National Team does not underestimate Mozambique and remains focused on securing points to maintain positive momentum ahead of the AFF Cup.

Erick Thohir reminded the players not to take Mozambique lightly during the international friendly match scheduled to take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium. He assessed that the Garuda squad must remain consistent in earning points, even when facing opponents with a lower FIFA ranking.

“We must be consistent in seeking points. As I mentioned earlier, I feel the team is very focused, and Coach John is also very focused. Hopefully, we can maintain this momentum heading into the AFF Cup,” said Erick while monitoring the national team’s training session at the Madya Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (8/6).

Erick stated that the team’s condition is focused ahead of the match. He attended the training session specifically to provide support and discuss the needs of the coaching staff and players. “It is common for me to drop by during national team training to say hi, discuss any shortcomings, and provide input so that we can support the national team,” added Erick.

According to Erick, PSSI continues to monitor player conditions, including Justin Hubner and Mees Hilgers. He noted that squad depth is a crucial factor in managing injury risks amidst an increasingly tight football schedule and competition. “We need squad depth. Otherwise, if someone gets injured, there will be a void,” he said.

He further noted that during the recent match against Oman, the defence faced significant pressure, but players such as Ridho, Elkan, and Justin were able to recover, while Emil’s penalty save was also remarkable. The PSSI Chairman also expressed appreciation for John Herdman’s decision to play players like Matthew Baker and others during the 3-0 victory over Oman, noting that the team’s regeneration is progressing positively.
