Erick Thohir Reports to Prabowo on Indonesia's Bid to Host FIFA ASEAN Cup

Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir and Indonesian national football team coach John Herdman met with President Prabowo Subianto at his residence in Hambalang, West Java. Erick stated that Prabowo supports Indonesia’s readiness to be selected as the host for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

‘For football itself, I reported that there has been a positive response from FIFA regarding Indonesia being one of the hosts for the FIFA ASEAN Cup in September-October this year,’ Erick told reporters on Friday (19/6/2026). ‘So, the President supports it. The President will prepare a letter so that later we can be chosen by FIFA to be the host. So we will wait for that,’ he added.

Erick said he will coordinate with other ministries in preparing for the competition. He explained that preparations require approval from several ministries, such as the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health, regarding tax and health requirements.

‘And I was also asked to immediately communicate with all ministries because a FIFA championship like this certainly requires approval from the Minister of Finance regarding taxes, the Minister of Health regarding health, and others. So this is what we support,’ he said.

The PSSI Chairman hopes that FIFA will officially appoint Indonesia as the host. He is confident that Indonesia will make good use of the opportunity. ‘Hopefully, in the next few weeks, FIFA will confirm who the host is, but I am confident we can get a good opportunity,’ he stated.
