Erdogan says NATO summit in Ankara will be very important for the alliance

Ankara (ANTARA) - The upcoming NATO summit of leaders to be held in Ankara, Turkey on July 7-8 will be one of the most important events in the history of the alliance amid changing global security architecture, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

“The NATO leaders’ summit that we will host in Ankara on July 7-8 has very crucial significance in the history of the alliance,” Erdogan told reporters aboard a plane after returning from Kazakhstan.

The president added that recent developments in the region and the international world further underscore the importance of the meeting in Ankara.

Turkey hopes for important decisions regarding the future of NATO and the evolution of the global security system, he said.

The modern world today is very different compared to the era when the alliance was founded, and threats have become more complex and diverse, Erdogan said.

The Turkish president also emphasised the need for a fair division of responsibilities within NATO, genuine cooperation, and a common security vision among member states.

Turkey is ready to provide the necessary contributions to make the alliance stronger and better prepared to face new threats, he said.
