MALAYSIA: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday
paid his respects to a Malaysian police officer who died of a
heart attack while providing security for the Turkish leader's
visit.
Erdogan, who ended a three-day trip to Malaysia on later
Sunday, spent 20 minutes at the home of policeman Razali Abu
Hassan's father, where the officer's body was placed before a
mid-afternoon burial, the national news agency Bernama reported.
Razali, 52, collapsed at a hotel on Saturday while guarding a
dinner hosted by Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar in
honor of Erdogan.
The Turkish leader's physician and other medical officials
tried to revive Razali - who reportedly had a history of heart
problems - but he was pronounced dead at a hospital. --AP

PM vows justice for terror suspects
THAILAND: Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Sunday said
justice will be served in the case of three Thai nationals
arrested for planning terrorist attacks during a major Asia-
Pacific summit this October.
Police in southern Thailand on June 10 arrested three
suspected members of the al-Qaeda-linked regional terror network
Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), who they say met earlier this year to plan
a series of bomb blasts in Thailand.
Police say two of the men, Islamic religious teacher Maisuri
Haji Abdullah and his son Mayahi Haji Doloh, admitted being JI
members and confessed to plots to bomb the embassies of
Australia, Britain, Israel, Singapore and the United States, and
several popular tourist sites in the kingdom.
A third man, Muslim medical doctor Waemahadi Wae-dao,
confessed he provided fake passports to members of JI, which is
linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terror network, according to
police.
The suspects' lawyer said the three had denied confessing to
being JI members or planning attacks. --AFP

RP captures Moro rebel camp
PHILIPPINES: Philippine soldiers captured a Moro guerrilla camp
and clashed with separatist rebels in the south in the latest
incidents to mar a unilateral cease-fire called by the rebels, a
statement said on Sunday.
Civilians tipped off the military about the presence of a camp
of the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on the
outskirts of Munai town in the southern island of Mindanao on
Friday, a military statement said.
The MILF guerrillas fled as the soldiers approached,
abandoning a large camp with bunkers capable of sheltering 150
people in Lanao del Norte province.
Rifle ammunition, grenades and radio equipment were also
recovered, the military said. --AFP

PM warns of potential power struggle
MALAYSIA: Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has expressed fears of
a possible power struggle in Malaysia's ruling party after he
retires in October, a newspaper reported on Sunday.
His comments come ahead of a crucial week for the ruling
United Malays National Organization (UMNO), which is set to hold
its annual congress amid much debate over how politics will
evolve after Mahathir's 22-year rule ends.
Mahathir, who is UMNO's president, warned that candidates
might jostle for key party posts after he steps down, but said no
one would likely challenge his deputy, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi,
whom he has picked as his successor.
UMNO, which represents Malaysia's ethnic Malay Muslim majority
and has formed the core of every government since the country's
independence from Britain in 1957, leads a coalition that
includes parties representing the large ethnic Chinese and Indian
minorities. --AP
