Epicentre of 4.3 Magnitude Shallow Earthquake in Cianjur Located in Cibeber District

The epicentre of a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in Cianjur Regency, West Java, on Tuesday (1/9) evening was located in Cibeber District. The local sub-district government has moved quickly to monitor developments on the ground.

The Head of Cibeber District, Ardian Athoillah, stated that the earthquake’s epicentre was situated between the borders of Kanoman Village and Cipetir Village, where tremors were felt quite strongly.

“There were two earthquakes yesterday (Tuesday). The first occurred at approximately 17:53 WIB with a magnitude of 4.3. Subsequently, an aftershock occurred at night, though on a smaller scale,” Ardian said when contacted on Wednesday (2/9).

Ardian noted that the shallow earthquake was caused by fault activity, suspected to be part of the Cisokan Fault segment. However, he added that this still requires further confirmation, though current information suggests the fault passes through Cibeber.

Following the earthquake, two houses were reported to have sustained damage, specifically cracks in the building structures. These houses are located in Pasirmunding Kampung, Sukaraharja Village. However, officials are still verifying the details as the reported damage is somewhat distant from the epicentre, and no impact has been reported at the exact epicentre so far.

Local authorities (Forkopimcam) are still conducting field assessments to monitor the situation and record the extent of the impact. Officials have urged residents to increase their preparedness and remain calm during seismic activity.
