Environmentally Conscious: Jakarta Provincial Government Invites Junior and Senior High School Students to Sort Waste

The Jakarta Provincial Government is inviting junior and senior high school students to participate in waste sorting initiatives, aiming to shift public behaviour towards greater environmental consciousness. Speaking at the Urban Knowledge Hub in South Jakarta on Monday, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that involving students is a fundamental step in accordance with Governor’s Instruction (Ingub) Number 5 of 2026, as the primary goal is to change character and individual habits regarding waste management.

According to the Governor, the implementation of waste sorting under Ingub Number 5 of 2026 is being undertaken seriously as part of an effort to improve Jakarta’s waste management system. He emphasised that the programme does not only target students but will also be expanded to the family level to ensure waste sorting becomes a widespread community habit.

“In fact, we are currently preparing to involve not just junior and senior high school students, but to make waste sorting a necessity for families. We will implement this massively because the previous methods of waste management in Jakarta are no longer sustainable,” said Pramono.

Furthermore, he noted that sorted waste can be utilised for various purposes, including the production of compost and biopores. “Waste can be used for compost, biopores, or whatever else we develop in Ciangir. Thus, our approach is not half-hearted; it is a comprehensive management strategy,” Pramono added.

As previously reported, the Jakarta Provincial Government will mandate residents to sort household waste starting from 10 May 2026 to reduce the accumulation of waste at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPST). The sorting initiative also aims to encourage changes in public behaviour regarding waste management as part of an effort to create a more sustainable and integrated waste handling system.
