Environment Minister urges DKI to replicate Rorotan's waste sorting scheme in other areas
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has requested the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to extend the waste handling and sorting scheme in Rorotan, North Jakarta, to all areas. “The next stage will involve a joint evaluation of our achievements in the Rorotan waste sorting initiative. We strongly urge the Special Capital Region of Jakarta to closely examine this case and its developments for replication,” he said during a review of household waste sorting practices in Rorotan Ward, Cilincing Subdistrict, North Jakarta, on Thursday. He highlighted the importance of waste management at the source as the primary step to reduce the load on final disposal sites (TPAs) and improve urban environmental quality. This can be achieved through effective waste management starting from households. “We have not yet seen complete 100 percent waste management in urban areas. In Rorotan, we are trying a simple and efficient model, starting with sorting at the household level. The pressure on Bantargebang must be reduced. If organic waste can be handled at home, the burden on the TPA will be significantly lessened,” he stated. Organic waste can be processed into compost or alternative fuels, while sorted inorganic waste is easier to collect and recycle. During the visit, he also inspected the Koepoe Koepoe Waste Bank Unit (BSU) and the Compost Bio Reactor in Rorotan Ward. These two facilities serve as real examples of local-level waste sorting and organic waste processing. The Koepoe-Koepoe Waste Bank manages household waste systematically and involves community participation, while the Compost Bio Reactor processes organic waste into high-quality compost that can be used for greening and urban farming activities. Additionally, in RW 06 of Rorotan Ward, residents have begun implementing waste sorting gradually over the past month, with active support from RT and RW cadres. Minister Hanif stated that the Ministry of Environment (KLH)/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), together with the North Jakarta Administrative City Government, will continue to monitor and evaluate the waste sorting programme’s implementation. The evaluation results will serve as a reference to promote the adoption of similar models in other wards in DKI Jakarta and nationally.
