Environment Minister urges corporations to actively prevent forest and land fires
Palembang (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat has urged corporations, particularly those operating in South Sumatra, to play an active role in efforts to prevent forest and land fires ahead of the 2026 dry season. Speaking to reporters in Palembang on Wednesday, Jumhur stated that the involvement of companies is vital, not only in safeguarding their respective concession areas but also in helping to monitor surrounding regions, including non-concession areas prone to fires. According to him, mitigation measures must be strengthened from the outset, including building reservoirs and maintaining land moisture, especially in peat areas vulnerable to burning during the dry season. “Peat cannot be extinguished in the usual way; it must be kept wet. Therefore, the presence of reservoirs and water management is very important,” he said. In addition, the government is continuing to strengthen the air quality monitoring system through fixed stations and mobile devices. If a decline in air quality or potential fire risks is detected, coordination across ministries, agencies, and local governments will be promptly carried out. The Ministry of Environment is also increasing oversight of companies that may commit violations, including land burning practices. He emphasised that perpetrators of burning for business interests will face firm sanctions. “If proven to be burning for business, it cannot be tolerated. The legal consequences are severe,” he said. As an additional preventive measure, the government is also encouraging companies to conduct independent environmental audits. The results of these audits will serve as a basis for mapping disaster risks, including forest and land fires. Preparedness from the start is the key to curbing the potential for forest and land fires, especially with indications of a prolonged dry season due to global climate phenomena. “If we prepare from now, God willing, the risks can be minimised,” said Jumhur.
