Environment Minister to Tighten Oversight of 1,538 Mining Companies on Water Issues
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Environment and Forestry Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that his ministry will tighten oversight of mineral and coal (minerba) extraction activities throughout 2026. According to him, this is an effort to enhance environmental protection, especially from the risk of water pollution due to mining activities. “We aim for tighter supervision of minerba extraction; this year, we will intensively monitor 1,538 minerba extraction companies,” Hanif said at the PROPER 2025 Environmental Award event on Tuesday (7/4/2026). Hanif explained that the supervision will focus on 14 provinces with mining activities. If a company does not yet have an Operational Fitness Certificate (SLO), the Ministry of Environment will consider suspending its operational permit. “So please understand that we are detailing activities in 14 provinces, including those companies; if there is no SLO certification for water disposal, we will consider suspending the company’s permit,” he stated.
