Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that several technical aspects must be fulfilled to build a Waste-to-Electricity Processing Facility (PSEL), including land capacity, accessibility, and connectivity to the electricity grid.

In a statement confirmed from Jakarta on Monday, the Environment Minister/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif explained that an initial technical review is conducted to assess the land capacity, accessibility, water availability, connectivity to the electricity grid, as well as transportation and demographic aspects of the prospective PSEL location.

“The results of this initial review will be followed up by a joint central government team to conduct an environmental feasibility assessment and technical readiness. If the characteristics are suitable, I will issue a ministerial decree from the Environment Minister/Head of BPLH regarding the construction of the PSEL,” said Minister Hanif.

“Then, with the approval of the Coordinating Minister for Food, the procurement of goods and services (tendering) will be carried out by Danantara,” he added.

He conveyed this after directly inspecting the readiness of the prospective PSEL location in Pakis Subdistrict, Malang Regency, on Sunday (29/3), as a follow-up to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between the East Java Provincial Government and the regency/city governments in the Greater Malang area.

In the construction of the PSEL in the Greater Malang region, the planned target for waste to be processed is 1,038 tonnes per day.

On that occasion, Malang Regent Sanusi expressed his readiness and welcomed the plan to build the PSEL in his area.

“We have prepared land here (in Pakis Subdistrict) for the construction of the PSEL. Next, we are still awaiting the assessment from the central government. We hope that if the PSEL is built here, Malang Regency can become an energy centre and have a positive impact on large industries in this region,” he said.

The acceleration of PSEL construction is a direct instruction from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, as part of efforts to address urban waste problems while promoting the utilisation of clean and renewable energy.

The PSEL is expected to improve waste management efficiency while producing sustainable electricity for communities and industries in Greater Malang.
