Semarang — The Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq inspected Mangkang Terminal in Semarang City, Central Java, on Sunday, to examine waste management facilities in preparation for the Lebaran 2026 migration influx.

The inspection was part of the Low-Waste Migration programme ahead of Lebaran 2026, which aims to ensure the terminal environment remains clean and services for travellers operate smoothly.

The minister highlighted waste management at the terminal, noting that although the volume is relatively small, it still requires coordination with the local Environmental Affairs Office to optimise handling. “The volume of waste at this terminal is not very large, but it remains important to manage properly so that handling is more organised. Providing the best service for passengers and travellers must be a priority,” he stated.

According to him, the government is committed to providing the best service for passengers and travellers using transportation hubs such as terminals and rest areas. “This is why cleanliness is a concern for the Environment Ministry,” he added.

To date, waste management efforts at Mangkang Terminal have been satisfactory, though they require continued improvement going forward. “For a small facility like this, maintaining environmental cleanliness is the priority and this falls under the supervision of Semarang City’s Environmental Affairs Office. We are not imposing the requirement for adequate facilities because what is needed is simply sufficient for waste sorting, which is adequate given the small volume,” he explained.

In addition to Mangkang Terminal, the Environment Minister also inspected cleanliness facilities and infrastructure at several toll road rest areas ahead of the Lebaran 2026 migration period.

Meanwhile, Mangkang Type A Terminal Head Reno Adi Pribadi explained that the terminal’s waste management system is already functioning well. Inside the building, waste is sorted by type — organic, inorganic, and pharmaceutical waste. After sorting, waste is collected at a temporary storage facility at the rear of the terminal before being removed by sanitation staff.

“The volume of waste at this terminal is not large. In two to three days, we produce approximately half a tonne. This terminal functions more as a transit point, so it does not have continuous heavy visitor traffic,” he said.
